I am enjoying doing an online art course at WATTS ATELIER; this was my work for Skill Building Challenge 19. Three drawings expressing three different emotions using Conte a Paris 1710 B pencil on smooth newsprint. Drawing is seen as a preliminary skill for painting, because it is important to understand the structure and plans of the head thoroughly before getting into colour and tone, even the way we hold the pencil is similar to holding a paint brush! Love learning news skills.
Feeling more confident with each drawing…….
Stormy morning at Terrigal. Painted in my small 20cmx15cm watercolour sketch book using gouache paints.
Photo reference and work in progress showing the mapping phase.
I took the intermediate path, drawing. Took heaps of photos of Mr Willcox, and selected sad, angry and joy. The above was…..SAD
I decided to do a Skill Challenge No. 18 at Watts Atelier on-line school. My first one and I am against some pretty amazing artists. We were required to arrange and photograph a Still Life; upload to the student forum and post our progress over a four week period.
First week was working on the composition……….(my collection of skulls)
Second week the lay-in. Notice how the front plane of the skull is too wide. I ended up taking a few centimetres out of it……
Adding in the mid tone….making decisions of what I want dark or light; filling in the mid tone by holding my pencil on its side and rolling the lead down the page. I am trying to be disciplined and not go dark to early, as dark can be impossible to lighten.
Conti pencil on smooth newsprint. A2
Completed work. ……and no I didn’t win.
Back to the drawing board…….
Been working on memorising the Asaro head, it is so tough to draw. I have pages of it.
Head Abstraction Front
Just uploaded 3 Head Abstractions to be marked. These are really tough and need to be almost perfect to get a pass. Now onto the Classic Asaro Head…..need to draw 12 from different angles for this assessment, this will keep me busy for a month.
